Hello lovelies. This week is sexual abuse and violence awareness week and this is what this weeks blog post is going to be about. The reason as to why this week is so important is that sexual abuse/violence victims often feel as though they cannot speak out about there ordeals and by raising awareness and sharing these ordeals with people who have gone through the same experiences as you can help and support the victims of this assault.
I took a survey for an online social newspaper at my uni and it was from here that I got my inspiration for this post. One of the questions was 'have you ever felt sexually assaulted in a nightclub?' and I answered yes to this question. It happened in Jesters (a club in Southampton), I was wearing a skirt, I was on the dance floor. Just a note, in Jesters, when the dance floor is busy it feels as though you're being pushed around rather than dancing because of how many people are crammed onto it. So I was dancing (being pushed) and the person behind me put there hand up my skirt and touched me inappropriately. I immediately jumped out of the way, I didn't even get to see the person face and so they didn't see mine either. I felt so disgusted that I left after it happened and I've never been back to the club. The thing that's troubling is that some people that I have spoken too about the incident have blamed it on me wearing a skirt for the incident happening. Due to this I have been saying that me wearing a skirt was a 'rookie mistake' but really it wasn't my fault at all. I did not give permission for that person to touch me and by wearing a skirt that is not giving permission. This is why this awareness week is so important to victims as we need to stop blaming the victims through ignorance and educate ourselves about helping them.
The reason I wanted to write this post is to display why we need this awareness week and to also direct victims to helpful places if they do not feel comfortable telling their friends and family. Here are a few helpful links that can give you support:
